Female undergraduate students interested in computer science.

Research Mentoring: “Exploring CS Research Areas” – bingo, mingling, small group discussion.
Competition 1: Problem Solving Speed Dating
Research Mentoring: “How can prepare myself now for a career in research?” – minute talks and vision boards.
Competition 2: Problem Solving Unwrapped

WHAT:

This workshop will bring together female CS research faculty, alumni, graduate students, undergraduate students, and members of WiCS to explore careers in CS research, network, and socialize.  Each workshop will conclude with a collaborative problem solving competition aimed to strengthen participants problem solving skills and confidence. Prizes will be awarded and dinner will be provided.

Day of the Event

What is the dress code?

Nothing fancy, just wear business casual and be comfortable.

What time should I arrive?

Please arrive at 10 am so we can get you checked and settled.

Will there be food?

Yes! Plenty! The event is fully catered including breakfast/coffee when you arrive and lunch midway through.

Do I need to prepare before I come?

Some of your will receive a bit of homework before attending, so if you have already completed the Data Structures class, keep on eye out for that.

Will there be prizes?

A lot of prizes! We have some awesome prizes including AirPods, HydroFlasks, FitBit, Kindle, and more!

Eligibility

Do I need to be a CS major to apply?

No. The only requirement is that you have completed at least one computer science course (at UIC or elsewhere) and that you are interested in Computer Science.

Do I need to identify as a female to apply?

No. Anyone is welcome to apply. Due to the funding specifications, we will be selecting participants based on various priorities. The goal of this program is to contribute to broadening participation and access to Computer Science. Therefore, selection will prioritize under-represented groups, particularly female.

Availability

Do I need to be available for the entire workshop?

Yes, availability for the entire workshop will be prioritized.

Fit

I am nervous about competing and not confident with my problem solving skills, would I be a good fit?

Yes! The goal of the workshop is strengthen problem solving skills and confidence. The competitions are designed to be welcoming and collaborative. It is always a little nerve wrecking trying something new, but please do trust us. It will be fun, empowering, and rewarding.

I don’t know what research in computer science is all about, would I be a good fit?

Yes! The workshop aims to introduce careers in computer science research to undergraduate students. We are assuming that this is all new to you!
